Navigating the Storm with Business Rules

September 13, 2018

Automating processes in an unpredictable world can be difficult at best.  Similar to planning for the approach of a deadly storm, we try to make decisions that will put us in the best possible position no matter the outcome.  With Hurricane Florence headed for the coast of Virginia and our head office located squarely in the “bullseye”, we’ve had to make several tough decisions this week.  Supplies were purchased, meetings were cancelled and employees were evacuated. All of these activities were necessary when the storm was headed straight for us, but what happens when the storm abruptly shifts south?  Suddenly, all the plans and processes that we put in place for a direct hit, are no longer valid and need to be rewritten.

When building a system that automates processes, it’s important to build something that is agile enough to react when the “storm shifts south”.   What happens when the regulatory environment that you operate in changes? What do you do when the business suddenly shifts directions due to the competitive environment?  How will your system react to new technological breakthroughs that impact your system landscape? The reality is that no enterprise operates in a stable environment and therefore every enterprise needs applications that are agile enough and flexible enough to grow and change.  The Decisions Rule Engine is ideally positioned to add this layer of agility to your system landscape.

Graphical Rule Editors

Decisions has a number of rule editors that make it possible for you to take processes out of difficult to maintain code.  Matrix Rules, Truth Tables, Rule Chains, Rule Sets, Statement Rules and Expression Rule editors make is possible to build very agile applications.  These graphical editors make it easy for developers and business users to build applications with building blocks that can easily be moved around as your business requirements evolve.  Furthermore, our native integrations with all the major single sign on technologies combined with granular authorizations make it possible to expose simple rules to business users for editing, while limiting the access to system critical rules to administrators.

Integrations and Robust APIs

Decisions also comes with a number of native integrations right out of the box, making it easy for you to add a layer of agility to your existing system landscape.  Whether your trying to add an approval process to SAP, or integrate with customer information in Salesforce, we have steps available to do it without writing any code.  We also have native integration to all the major database vendors and can easily bring information into the rules engine from your database or export a result to your database.  Finally, Decisions has very robust API’s built into the tool, making it possible to call any workflow, rule, or form to execute in an external system. Likewise, we have tools to quickly setup new connections with systems that have open APIs.  Decisions can make use of web-services to be called or to make calls. All these features combined, allow Decisions to quickly integrate with your existing infrastructure and to react as your infrastructure and requirements change over time.

So next time you prep for the incoming storm, make sure you have the agility in your system to handle all potential outcomes.  To learn more about how Decisions Rules Engine can help your organize, please contact us at sales@decisions.com.
